Making a difference in the world starts within ourselves.

Musician and writer Andre Henry talks about addressing our own pain and trauma to cultivate better relationships, challenging masculine and feminine norms, and creating more space for emotional and heartfelt conversation.

Tune in to this episode: Staying Soft in a Hard World with Marie-Elizabeth Mali & Andre Henry.

Key points covered in this episode:

✔️ The lack of space to address trauma destroys relationships. Social justice should be about working on healthy connections – be it with others or with ourselves. Andre wants to tell his story to uncover the facade of perfection.

✔️ Be more intentional about your femininity or masculinity. It isn’t being a good or bad person. It’s being aware of your ability to express your emotions and hone your emotional intelligence.

✔️ Never invalidate your partner’s feelings. As both of you openly share your emotions, approach it with an open mind. Be careful of the words you choose. Intention doesn’t instantly reflect on impact.

✔️ A shift has to happen. Men must learn to feel deeply and verbalize how they feel. Women have to de-armor after years of putting up walls against the patriarchy.

✔️ Re-do moments where you contradict yourself. Try your best to explain your intent clearly and empathize with the person you have upset.

Andre Henry is a musician and writer using his creativity to build a movement for racial healing and social progress. He has spent years searching for answers about how ordinary people can change the world through collective action and is working hard to spread to mainstream audiences what he’s learned on this journey.
